Fertiliser and pesticides policy

Since pesticides can pose significant health and safety issues and are regulated in the UK by the Health and Safety Executive - opens in new window or tab, we have specific rules about selling them on eBay. Medicinal pesticides are regulated separately by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate - opens in new window or tab.

We take great care to protect the health and safety of our members. This policy reflects our commitment to eBay user safety by strictly adhering to government regulations on the sale and transportation of dangerous goods.

What is the policy?

Pesticide products are not allowed on eBay if they are:

  • Unregistered, misbranded or restricted-use pesticides under country government regulations
  • Suspended, canceled or banned by federal or state government agencies
  • Located outside UK
  • Unbranded
  • Repackaged or in previously opened packaging
  • Ineligible for shipment through standard shipping providers

The following are restricted:

  • Pesticides that are allowed can only be sold by business sellers that have:
    • A specified sale and supply certificate (the BASIS Certificate for Sale and Supply)
    • A sufficient number of staff with that certificate to inform buyers on pesticide use, health and environmental risks and safety instructions at the time of sale
    • All legal requirements for storage, handling, disposal, packaging of products and cleaning of equipment in order to not endanger human health or the environment. (Please visit the HSE Guidance on storing pesticides for farmers and other professional users - opens in new window or tab)
    • A note to the buyer of their obligation to ensure the end user has the proper certificate to use professional plant protection products
    • Received acknowledgement from the buyer that they have read and understood the user certification requirements

Activity on eBay is required to follow this policy, the eBay User Agreement and all applicable laws, as well as respect the rights of third parties. If it doesn’t, eBay may take action consistent with applicable laws and the eBay User Agreement, and may even be legally required to do so. Such actions may include, as an example only: Removing the listing or other content, issuing a warning, restricting activity or account suspension.

Why does eBay have this policy?

Because pesticides are potentially dangerous to people, animals and the environment, we have specific rules about selling them on our site.
